Lying motionless, as best he could, with Christian’s head still resting upon him, Seth breathed shallowly to keep his chest from rising and falling too much. Given the depth with which Christian slept, he was fairly certain the young man wouldn’t have been stirred if he had chosen to breathe fully, but somehow, he thought it was best anyway. Focusing on each inhale and exhale was relaxing for him; it was the calm he needed. The night had gifted him several hours to ponder quietly what he was doing, all that had happened, and what choices he now had to make. Additionally, he had counted nearly every popcorn shadow in the tacky textured ceiling, numbered each of the small freckles he could see on Christian, and managed to create an entire story from the small scar hidden just beneath the young man’s hairline.

Running his hand softly through Christian’s blonde hair he inhaled slightly deeper than he had previously; the man with his head on his chest smelled good. He could also smell Wren outside his window and knew he was being watched but it only made him all the more certain that the man he cradled to sleep was loved deeply. That idea was important to Seth. As much as he wanted to be with Christian, he knew it was something that would never work. He isn’t Carly. Arguing his decision internally and trying to point out the obvious, Seth bit his lip. I know he’s not Carly, but he IS mortal. With a split mind and further divided emotions on the entire subject, he bit down harder. His best friend is a werewolf. Looking down at the peaceful man snoring lightly on his chest, Seth continued to gently move his hand through Christian’s soft blonde hair. You are something Christian.

Recognizing there was an almost ethereal pull towards the man in his bed, the grieving soul that he allowed to sleep clinging to his body all night, he lamented for what he was going to have to give up. You deserve so much better than what I can give you. Justifying the hated decision that he would have to leave Blackwood and never see Christian again, he bit down hard enough to draw blood. Son of a Bitch. Berating himself briefly, he leaned his head back and tried to rest his mind. He knew the light would rouse Christian soon, and it would be best to at least appear as though he had been sleeping. Plus, the werewolf protector who had so diligently been standing guard all night had left. He wasn’t threatened by the nice smelling wolf-man outside, but the idea that he wasn’t trusted meant he needed to keep his guard up, just in case.

Listening intently Seth could hear Christian’s heart beating slowly and steadily. The noisy heating unit in the window of the room, however, didn’t require any effort to hear at all. Rumbling low as it blew air, sometimes warm, other times not so warm, it vibrated with a sound that was both annoying and yet, somehow, relaxing.
